Detectives from Knowsley's SIGMA team are appealing for information following an incident in Northwood, Kirkby on Thursday, 2 December.
At around 10.55pm the security guard at Quarry Green Heights was in his office when he was racially abused by a man, who then kicked at the door of his office.
The security guard was uninjured but left very distressed by his ordeal.
The offender is described as white, 5ft 10in tall, aged between 30 and 35 with a Liverpool accent.
Officers have released CCTV of a man they would like to trace who may be able to assist with enquiries.
DI Andrew Ryan said: "Merseyside Police will always take robust action when investigating reports of hate crime.
"We are appealing to the public for their assistance in this matter, if anyone recognises this man or has any information about this incident, please make contact with officers.
"This crime is being investigated by one of the force's specialist SIGMA investigation teams. SIGMA teams are dedicated to investigating crimes targeted at minority and vulnerable groups."
