Toby Gilles

How did you get into radio?

Boring and standard I’m afraid. I did a radio course down in Brighton, and then applied and applied and applied all over the place until some mad fools gave me my first job!

If you weren’t on the radio what would you be doing?

Probably still in my previous job! I was very happy there, but I couldn’t turn down the chance to apply for a job at City, and when they offered it to me, there was no chance I’d say no.

What would you regard as your greatest achievement yet?

Sounds cheesy, but getting the gig here is definitely up there! Beyond work, probably getting a distinction for my French Horn Grade 8 even though I felt terrible…the following day I was diagnosed with “the worst case of glandular fever I’ve ever seen” by my GP!

What’s the best story you’ve ever reported on?

I loved the one where a chicken laid a big egg, and it turned out to be 2 – one egg inside the other! No…seriously…those were the days!

Four words to describe yourself…

Talkative, clumsy, generous, confident

What bands / acts are you into? I LOVE Prince. After that an eclectic mix from Jamiroquai to Stevie Wonder, from weird and wonderful jazz to indie, from The Beatles to The White Stripes and from Elton John to Daft Punk.

What was the last album you bought?

The Greatest Hits of The Rolling Stones

What’s your favourite thing about the city?

Genuinely, I’ve not got a bad word to say about the people of this city. Everybody is so friendly, which makes a lovely change for someone used to the rudeness of most Londoners!

How would you describe Liverpool?

Friendly, friendly, friendly, forward thinking, forward moving. Oh, and friendly.

What’s your favourite memory of the city?

There aren’t many yet, I’ve not been here that long – but 2007’s Radio City Xmas party was great. Of course I can’t divulge too much – what goes at the Xmas party, stays at the Xmas party…

If you couldn’t be in Liverpool, where would you be?

A nice hot beach, with clear blue seas. Possibly somewhere in Italy or Greece. If we’re talking about to live, then controversially, I loved Manchester when I was at Uni there!

If you were given the power to pass one law right now what would it be?

Ban smoking. Definitely.

Do you have any guilty pleasures?

I’m worryingly fanatical about Prince! Recently saw him 3 (yes, THREE) times at the O2 in London! Otherwise I love stupidly expensive watches, even though I can’t afford them…

How do you like to relax?

Listen to music, watch footy, SLEEP!, spend money I don’t have, and window shop for the aforementioned watches!

If we’re talking football, who would you rather see lift silverware?

Oh, that’s a really tough one…I’m not a Blue…but I’m not a Red either. And I’m not even a Rovers fan! Can I sit on the fence?
